Grüß Gott (literally ‘God greet (you)’) is a greeting used by Austrians and… me 🙂 while I was staying in the beautiful Carinthia (English) or Karnten (German) region !
Situated within the Eastern Alps, the region is niched between mountains and lakes and therefore offers travellers a rather diverse range of activities. No, you will not find a picture of me climbing one of the mountains but I cannot promise I will not load a lot of amazing pictures from the lakes ! Indeed, Carinthia compromises a total of 200 lakes, very popular destinations for holidays and bathing holidays.
Faaker See is one of the lake I choose to go to for a little boat trip, you can rent an electric boat for about 30 euro for 1 hour. Ok sounds expensive but the view is fantastic and the turquoise water, mind blowing !! The boat is a great opportunity to explore the coast and suck up on some sunshine. After the hour of “sport” I hugely recommend you to stop at Die Strandbar , the Bar facing the lake of the Villa Bianche Hotel , for a refreshment. This is definitely the place for me… cool music, nice décor and a fresh Aperol always awaited me wonderfully.
In the evening, I often went to Villach, the 2nd largest city of Carinthia. The city is located on the Drava (Drau) river and kept a lot of its old time features. It is very easy to discover the city by foot and super safe so ideal if you are with kids as they can run around while you relax in one of the many cafes of the city.
Of course, I did not miss a trip to the Holiday Inn Villach – which I reviewed in a previous post. Click here to view. The hotel is a more international place to stay at, with many guests coming from UK, France, Germany, China, … for conventions.
My favourite city of the Carinthia must be Velden… the city is known as the “Monte Carlo of Austria” and looking at the beauty of the lake it is easy to understand why this place is so busy during the Summer season. Velden is located at the western shore of the Wörthersee lake it is one of the most popular holiday resorts of Austria.
A must try is the SchlossHotel Velden, one of the most luxurious hotel of the region. In the early 17th century a noble family built a renaissance manor house, sadly, it was destroyed by a fire and then rebuilt in 1892 as the Schloss Velden.
I enjoyed truly the fantastic walks that we have done, nature is beautiful in Carinthia. You don’t need to be an expert like some of the people I met along the way, just get your trainers and enjoy the view…
Now, as they say in Austria… Auf Wiedersehen !
