Travelling to Thailand was by far the highlight of 2015 ! I have never travelled to that side of the world and let me tell you something, it won’t be the last time.
Koh Yao Yai is an island between Phuket and Krabi, relatively untouched by mass tourism therefore requires a little bit more work to access. From Phuket, head to the Phuket Bang Rong Pier and get a long tail boat or a speed boat. This is public transportation though so the comfort levels may not meet your expectations…not ideal if you are not a backpacker!
We had to go to Ao Po Grand Marina (25min from the airport) to hire a speed boat transfer – organised by the hotel – as our flight landed too late for us to get on time for the hotel’s daily transfers. This option was very expensive i am not going to lie but it took us to the hotel in 20min so was ideal after such a long journey. Most resorts (only a few) on the island can assist you with the transfers. Alternatively, take one of the ferrie long tail boat with daily departures from Phuket at 9.30 am, 12 noon and 5 pm for 50 bath. The journey from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai is simply incredible ! The colour of the sea, the islands, just heaven… Koh Yai Transfer website will tell you the boat time table www.kohyaotravel.com On the island, the best is to hire a motorbike or a scooter for around 200 bath half day or a tuk tuk ! Bare in mind that not everyone has a driving licence on the island…and kids are often driving motorbikes so be careful 😉
